Winter Sun Destinations in Europe for Motorhomers

Searching for the sun this winter. Here are some of Europe's best spots for a road trip to warm up. For this article will look at two of our favourite sunny destinations in Spain, Portugal, France and Italy.

Spain

The North of Spain (especially inland) can get very cold during the winter months. However the south of Spain can offer you the the warmer conditions you crave.

1. Costa Del Sol

Famous as a top summer destination the Costa del Sol still remains fantastic in low season. Winter temperatures will commonly reach highs of 17ºC which keeps it a popular tourist destination all year round. The white-sanded beaches and chilled atmosphere can be enjoyed by those simply looking for a mid-winter relaxation. For motorhome owners there are many wonderful campsites to choose from. We recommend Camping Cabopino for its spacious pitches, family friendly atmosphere and for the beautiful marina nearby.

2. Seville

If you want to discover Spanish culture and beautiful architecture then look no further than the quaint city of Seville. Seville remains warm throughout the seasons, with residents so confident of its pleasant climate that many reject the idea of central heating! The city is famed for its Three Kings Festival: the traditional Spanish icons of Christmas, as well as its hosting of bullfighting, which is held in the magnificent Seville Plaza de Toros.

Portugal

Once continental Europe’s greatest power, Portugal shares commonalities geographic and cultural with the countries of both northern Europe and the Mediterranean.

1. Algarve

The Algarve region of Portugal is one of the most popular places in Europe for campervan and motorhome owners to visit.  And for good reason.  The Algarve has fantastic year-round weather, stunning coastline, beautiful mountains, lots of history, and it's not too expensive either. Considering how popular the Algarve is a tourist destination, there are surprisingly few campsites. Wild camping is illegal in the Algarve. However, the police and local authorities generally tolerate sensible wild camping outside of the summer period.

2. Lisbon

Why not let Lisbon be your European Winter Wonderland this year? Shop for less, ignite those taste buds with every meal, no matter what your budget, and bask in Portuguese culture with its historical sights and awesome art galleries. Lisbon has a good choice of campsites. Some cost as little as €4 per night, for two people and a camper van or motorhome, off-season.

France

The great thing about France is each region looks and feels different, has its own style of architecture, its own characteristic food and often its own dialect. This diversity is perfect for a road trip even during winter.

1. Basque Country

There are fine stretches of sand all along the Basque Country's rugged coast, perfect for motorhome enthusiasts. Cooler and cleaner than the Mediterranean, the Atlantic rarely laps gently against the shore, and therein lies its appeal. Any decent swell washing about in the open Atlantic is free to roll in through the deep trench in the floor of the Bay of Biscay, arriving as some of the best surfing breaks in Europe. Unlike some of the other destinations on this list, Basque weather is notoriously unpredictable in winter so be prepared just incase you catch some rain.

2. Nice

Nice in the winter months is filled with locals instead of tourists, the uncrowded museums and markets, a cup of hot spiced wine on the giant winter-only Ferris Wheel off Place Massena,  Italian-style hot chocolate so thick you can eat it with a spoon, watching the waves during the occasional winter storm, free Sunday afternoon winter orchestra concerts at Notre Dame or the Eglise on the Port.

Italy

Italy is a treasure trove of culture, beautiful landscapes, and most importantly good food!

1. Sicily

Sicily has long been a crossroads and crucible of Mediterranean culture, and the island today is a fascinating palimpsest in which Greek temples, Norman churches and Baroque palazzos emerge from the rich fabric. But it also has natural wonders aplenty, from the smoking craters of Mount Etna to the still relatively undiscovered beaches of the southern coast, making Sicily a top destination for motorhomers all year round.

2. Salento

There are many good reasons to visit the region of Salento even in the coldest months and discover the many qualities that belong to this earth and beyond the beauty of summer. The town of Otranto also has its charm with the characteristic fortified center and the narrow streets with artisan workshops. The sea takes on a different aspect from the summer months, no mess, no fuss, no noise but gives only an immense feeling of peace and tranquility, perfect for a winter break.

If you wish to fit in some of these great destinations but lack a campervan or motorhome check out yescapa.com and choose from over 3000 vehicles to hire across Europe.
